Hiring Range: $40,996.80 - $45,198.40
The Library Specialist is a paraprofessional position that provides library services and operational support within an assigned area. Specialists may be assigned to any division of the library. Divisions of the library include Public Services, Youth Services, Technology & Marketing, Community Services, Materials Management, Arts and Administration.
1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent with Two (2) years of Library Experience
OR
Associates Degree with One (1) year of Library Experience
OR
Bachelor's Degree or higher
2. Experience operating a computer, including Microsoft Office
3. Excellent internal and external customer service skills
4. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks; push and unload heavy carts, lift up to 40 lbs and maneuver among high and low shelves
5. Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekdays, nights and weekends
6. Possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain/maintain a City of Hoover Driver's Permit
7. Passport Certification from the US Department of State is not necessary when applying, but must be obtained within (6) months of employment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Provides a high degree of customer service; provides knowledgeable, responsive, and welcoming assistance to patrons; ensures all work, whether public-facing or behind the scenes, supports a positive customer experience; Provides direct service to the public, including reference, reader’s advisory, circulation, and technology assistance; supports or delivers programs, outreach, and other library services to either adults or children, depending on assigned division; Library Specialists assigned to Youth Services may require storytelling; assists with some collection management and other specialized functions, such as passport services; performs technical and operational duties within the assigned area; assists with problem-solving and responds appropriately to customer needs; performs other duties as assigned by supervisor;
Library Specialists work independently within established policies and procedures and are expected to exercise judgment and initiative. Specialists may provide operational leadership within their assigned area when a Librarian or Manager is unavailable.
